Petronas Twin

It
was once the world tallest building. But they were not
originally planned to be the tallest - the original plans were
for a height of 427m - 15m shorter than Chicago's Sears Tower.
They were later reworked and pinnacles were added to raise the
height to 452m. And the 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers entered
the history books. Built on the site of the former Selangor Turf
Club, it is now the centrepiece of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre
(KLCC) project. The RM 1.8 billion building was designed by
US-based Argentinian architect Cesar Pelli was officially opened
by the former Prime Minister Tun Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad on
National Day in 1999. The skybridge located on the 41st and 42nd
floors was opened to the public in May 2000.

Kuala Lumpur

Situated
atop Bukit Nanas In the vicinity of KL's hotel district, this
421m high concrete tower is Asia's tallest and the fourth
tallest in the world. Visitor can enjoy a panoramic view of the
city from its observation deck as well as the revolving
restaurant. The tower also serves as a transmission station for
telecommunications, radio and television.

Chinatown (Petaling

The spirits of old Kuala Lumpur is still alive
in Chinatown. At Petaling Street, traders still sell their wares
in the street as they have done for generations in one of the
city's oldest settlements. By day hawkers sell fruits, roast
duck and snacks. By night it is a bazaar crammed with makeshift
stalls selling almost anything and everything from fake Rolex
watches to Armani jeans. Kuala Lumpur folk still call it Shu
Chong Kai (Tapioca Factory Road) because Yap Ah Loy owned such a
factory there.

Near the site of an all-day, all-night gambling
den run by Yap Ah Loy - the third Kapitan Cina of Kuala Lumpur -
the capital's wet market was completed in 1936. It was renovated
into its current form in 1986 and is today an award-winning
Malaysian arts and crafts centre. It has 30 food outlets inside
and cultural performances are some times held in an open-air
amphitheatre beside the banks of Klang river.

Jalan Masjid India runs beside Jalan Tuanku
Abdul Rahman and was named after the mosque there. It is lined
with Indian shops selling perfumes, spices, incense, sarees,
brassware and jewellery and Malay shops specialising in batik,
songkok, prayer mats and robes. The street is lively with heady
mixture of colour, aroma and sounds and there are flower
vendors, food and souvenir stalls, buskers and blind musicians.
Among the more interesting vendors are Malay medicine men plying
jamu and various brews that claim to cure just about anything.
Budget hotels and restaurants, which serve Indian and Malay food
are also located in this area. |

Dataran
Merdeka or Merdeka square, an Immaculately-turfed 8.2 hectare
area of historical interest. A 100m high flagpole marks the spot
where the Malayan Flag was hoisted on August 31, 1957 signifying
the independence of the country from British rule. At the
opposite end of the square is an inviting spot where visitors
can relax amid soothing rushing waters of fountains, elegant
colonnades and colorful beds of zinnias and marigolds. Beneath
the square is Plaza Putra, an underground food, leisure and
entertainment complex.

The residence of
the Yang Dipertuan Agung is a major tourist attraction and so
are the palace guards and horse - mounted guards. The original
building, completed in 1929, was the result of a Chinese
millionaire's brief to the architect to build the "biggest
house in Kuala Lumpur and Straits Settlements". History has
found it to be fit for a King.

Batu Caves consists of several small caves and
a main cavern housing a shrine. The Caves, devoted to the Hindu
deity Lord Murugan, can be reached by flight of 272 steps.
Spectacular sights of stalagtites and stalamites can be observed
from safe walkways for visitors. A variety of stalls are also
located at the temple grounds.

Western frontier fun comes alive at Fort Lagoon - Wild, Wild
West where you can take 'white knuckle' rides on a Grand Canyon
River Rapids, the Buffalo Bill Coaster and the Colorado Splash.
The park also offers dry adventure activities. Ride in Apache
Pots, test your nerves on the Flying Carpet or ride the skies on
a Galleon. Other attractions include runaway train, pedestrian
suspension bradge and sky flyer.

is a family-oriented theme park, located along Jalan Sungai Besi,
south of Kuala Lumpur, on the fringes of a huge lake, once the
site of the world's largest open cast mining. its main
attraction is the dazzling musical fountain and multi-colored
laser show held at 7.30pm. Visit the Snow House to experience
winter and enjoy the many rides and amusement facilities at the
park. Adjoining the Mines Wonderland is the Mines Shopping Fair.
A novel way to travel from the Mines Wonderland to this
Venetian-inspired shopping complex is to take a water taxi to
enjoy the scenic views of the lake. |
